We cannot be sure of the cause of Margaretâs death, but the implication is that it must have been from illness; if it had been the result of any kind of hostile action then contemporaries would have remarked upon it. Her nephew Henry was himself killed in an accident only days afterwards, and the double news of both deaths, when it reached her back in France, was enough to send Marie of Champagne into a depression from which she never recovered.
Margaret of France led a thrilling (though not always happy or comfortable) life, but she has left a curiously slight personal impression. Her appearances in contemporary narrative are fleeting, and almost all relate to someone else â father, father-in-law, brother, husband â meaning that her personal thoughts and feelings are all but unknowable. We can speculate, perhaps, that she was determined to make the best of the life that was allocated to her: she had no say in the choice of either of her husbands, but we can see that she worked at her duties and her relationships and that both Young Henry and Béla came to esteem and perhaps even love her. She played an intercessory role as well as anyone could have done, given the extremely difficult family circumstances with which she was often faced. At the very end of her life, when Margaret finally found herself free of the shackles of marriage that had been placed on her when she was just 2 years old, we can see that she took very decided action on her own behalf and in pursuit of her own desires, uprooting herself once again to travel â without husband, father or brother â to achieve a fervent ambition that was all her own.
